Do back braces you buy from a normal catalog really help with posture?

I have bad posture and resulting upper back tension
I bought one similarish to this and it was hideously uncomfortable!!! Where the straps come around your arms/shoulders it cuts into your armpits and rubs. It was completely impractical for wearing under clothes for these reasons and therefore restricted its usability. [...]
